Visions of Oz Flickr Contest

Haven't you always wanted to fly over the rainbow and have the pictures to prove you were there? Now's your chance! Enter the Visions of Oz Flickr contest and document all those amazing adventures you can have every day at the Magic of Oz sim. Running now through October 18, 2009 as part of the One year Oziversary Celebrations. Read below for complete details!

The Visions of Oz Flickr Competition is brought to you by the Magic of Oz sim.

Conditions of Entry:

1. You must purchase & feature at least one product available from the Magic of Oz sim merchants. *** Use of the demo items will not be accepted***

2. You must take the picture at the Magic of Oz sim and it must be obvious that this is where you took the picture. The picture can be taken anywhere on the Magic of Oz sim so explore and find the spot that speaks to you. :)

3. You must be a member of the Magic of Oz Flickr Group.

4. Entrants are limited to a maximum of two entries. Only one picture from any one resident can win a place (i.e. 1st or 2nd prize).

5. By entering this competition you agree to your pictures being used in future by the owners of the Magic of Oz sim for any promotional purposes and to the picture/s being on display in world after the competition.

6. Pictures must be uploaded to the Magic of Oz Flickr Group and contain the following information: your complete name (Second Life name that is), the product or products belonging to Oz merchants in the picture, and the part of the sim you took the picture at.

7. Entries uploaded after Midnight SLT time on the 18th of October, 2009 will not be entered in the contest.

*** There are TWO categories, but you may enter only one of them, so choose carefully:

**Category 1: Photographic.

This category is for those who do not wish to or do not use image editing software such as Photoshop, Gimp or Paintshop etc. This category is there for those who rely solely on in world lighting, set, costume, shot perspective etc.

You may however crop your picture but that is the extent of any photo manipulation. Those entering this category who are found to have not kept by these simple and clear guide lines will be disqualified.

"Help!" cried Dorothy. "The Wicked Witch of the West is trying to take over Oz! Will no one helps us defeat this evil plot?"

If you fail to answer Dorothy's call for help then I'm afraid, poor soul, that the Witch already has her claws sunk deep into your heart and you are beyond any help I can offer you - but those still pure of heart listen well.

After one glorious year filled with happiness and golden sunshine, a cloud of gloom is descending over Oz. From Munchkin Land to the great City of Emerald itself plans were being made for a glorious celebration to mark the one year anniversary of Magic of Oz and the good fortune the fair Candy and the gallant Malk have brought to the land. However, the Wicked Witch caught wind of the plans and is now meaning to hijack the celebration, steal all the anniversary gifts for herself, and allow only the flying monkeys to dance at the balls!

We need your help to save the Oziversary Celebration! Starting Monday, October 12th, citizens and friends of Oz alike will join forces to defeat The Witch's evil plans! 21 merchants of Oz have made gifts for those brave enough to battle The Witch. Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, has learned that The Witch intends to capture the Silver Slippers and thus take control of the celebration. Glinda has made an infinite number of copies of the Silver Slippers to hide all over the Magic of Oz sim in order to confuse The Witch.

The fake slippers are of no use to The Witch but if you find a fake pair of slippers and follow the directions hidden in them, Glinda will reward you for helping to increase the Wicked Witch's confusion! The Silver Slipper Hunt will run for the duration of the Oziversary celebration, October 12-18, so be sure to find some time to come and help confuse The Witch.

In addition to the Silver Slipper Hunt, there will also be a photo contest, fishing contests with unique items to find and lindens to win, and dancing, dancing, dancing! More information to follow in subsequent posts, but remember Oz is counting on you! Mark your calendars, The Silver Slipper Hunt starts on Monday, October 12 at the Magic of Oz sim! Naiad and Belisama Sets for Swansong

Candy was invited to participate in the fashion event "Black Swan - Swansong" which has an Elemental theme. She was asked to choose from Fire, Water, Earth and Air. Luckily for us she went for two of these with the polar opposites Fire and Water, but it left her too exhausted to blog and announce her releases - so I volunteered. I'm her friend Ersatz Charisma, and I'm thrilled to be able to present her best works yet, the magnificent Belisama and Naiad sets.

As you can see, Belisama's Mantle is an absolute statement piece, with the firefall flowing down the back ending in a dangle of gold chains that lick at your gown. Belisama's Jewels has the same front, and is a little simpler. This is for the days when you just want to look quietly elegant, not be the one that raises a chorus of admiration when you enter the room.

The set also comes with a Torc, it's very easily wearable and is unisex for those of you men with a little more boldness in your style.

The Naiad parure is complementary to Belisama, being the soothing waters to it's fiery tempest. Naiad also comes in a Mantle, Jewels and a Torc. But the blues used in this are best for the more delicate beauties amongst us, the cool and fair types.

As you can see, though - none of the drama of this is lost in the icy shades. It's still a spectacle, and the gloss of the waterfall is the perfect hightlight to any shade of skin.

The texture of the silvers and golds retains the hammer marks of a true jewellery Artisan. And whilst it remains a startlingly contemporary set, it will also prove a timeless piece that will still make you feel that much more beautiful every time you clasp it around your neck.

Currently only available at Black Swan sim for the Swansong Event, and it comes in separates or the complete set of each, comprising of Mantle, Jewels and Torc. And at the Swansong you can also buy the gown that I'm showing it with, Candace Aflame by Tabitha Ninetails of the Laughing Academy. These two created their items to complement each other, and it's one of the best collaborations I've ever seen.

My entry into the Fashion Designer Challenge is now in my main store at Oz! The name Eternal Winter is a play on both the inspiration of the piece (My challenge was to design a set inspired by the IceHotel in Sweden) and my continuing homage to a certain white haired vampire fashion icon. Something Not to Be Missed...

Now, I am not a blogger except when I have to be. Usually that is product releases or events or if something really impresses or excites me... this would be the latter.

In SL today, I stumbled across a cheery looking guy holding a sign that directed me to a SL Japanese website. I could not translate it well so I asked for help from my good friend Risusipo Jun (who many of you know as the maker of adorable chipmunks!) She told me that it was a petition to protest the closing of a Japanese game company's sim on March 28th (March 29th JST) The sim was ALTUSVEGAS. She and a friend of hers began showing me some of the avatars available from this sim. To say they are stunning is an understatement. They are complete avatars from shape to clothes to AOs and some of the coolest things I have seen in SL.

I went to the sim and was just blown away, both by the cool factor of the place - and that I had never heard of it. I felt like I had to share and hopefully more people can experience it before it is gone - and pick up these avatars, as they are only between 300-600 each for simply amazing work. I probably got a dozen just to have them. Here's a few quick poorly done shots, but PLEASE go check it out in the next few days before it disappears for good!

New Releases at The Armoire!

There's only one day left to check out The Armoire and participate in the hunt - we have five great designers showing their wares and an interesting and challenging hunt for some gorgeous items, including some that won't be sold after the hunt is over. BE SURE TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HUNT! It isn't hard, but you won't know what to do if you just skim them or don't read them at all. The effort is worth it, I promise!

For those who might think this is a negative snarky post, please read the original intent of the thing. There probably aren't many people who haven't been bullied at some point or another. It isn't ok to do as children and it certainly isn't as adults. It is just bad behavior - no matter what sweet frosting is put on top. So let's rise above it. Crimson Shadow Necklaces from Eye Candy!

I was fortunate enough to participate in the Rezzable Crimson Shadow Designers Event an I was inspired to make two pieces that I think are some of my best sculpted work yet. I've done a female and male version called respectively The Sanguine Temptress and The Onyx Scorpion - the first in a series called Night Sanctum.

The Night Sanctum series begins with two pieces created entirely with sculpted prims - The Sanguine Temptress and The Onyx Scorpion. Both are bold statement necklaces inspired by the wild and dangerous nature of Crimson Shadow. Sanguine Temptress has blood red rubies and 18 karat gold tendrils that seem to almost move of their own accord while Onyx Scorpion features faceted onyx and burnished silver curving seductively into a deadly yet beautiful tail.

We've got a ton of things going on for the sim opening Friday and Saturday. An Epic Hunt - Find the Slippers Hunt has some extraordinary EXCLUSIVE prizes from designers like Silent Sparrow, Miriel, Schadenfreude, Long Awkward Pose, The Stringer Mausoleum, Juicy, MnM Design, Designs of Darkness, and the list goes on and on! The Magic is Almost Here...

Things are getting pretty exciting on our sim, we have an opening date! October 3rd, huzzah :) We did a stress test a few days ago and the response was really positive... we had several nice folks blog about us and lots of people came out just on word of mouth - since we didn't publicize the test at all. We have SO many stunning pictures on our flickr group that people took (http://www.flickr.com/groups/magicofoz/pool/) but our friend Berry did a spectacular picture of the whole sim I wanted to share... Ok, this post is actually about someone else's stuff, heh! I have to brag on my partner's latest eye series - they really raise the bar on SL eyes. Completely hand drawn - that's right, not lifted from the web and hue changed but really honest to goodness created BY the person selling them - it's sad to say but it seems that is happening more and more lately in Second Life. Hooray for designers who actually have creativity =)

New Collection - Mokume Gane!

Finally finished a big new release: The Mokume Gane Collection. Mokume Gane is an ancient Japanese technique that merges many individual layers of different metals using heat and pressure to form a single layer that is then carved and polished to form lovely organic patterns. I have been an admirer of the metalworking style for many years and I now have exclusive textures that capture the effect so I'm pretty excited to bring it to Second Life!
The Mokume Gane Collection has lines for both men and women.

The men's line consists of a Triangle necklace (mokume piece on black twisted leather cord) leather cuff (with mokume insets and buckle) and ring (a classic style with a mokume inlay)
The prices are:
Necklace 200L
Cuff 150L
Ring 100L

The women's series has four pieces: An ornate choker with all prim inlay around the entire band (great for updos!), a wide cuff bracelet with raised mokume and an oval center, a classic style oval ring with mokume inlay, and an oval mokume pendant on a delicate chain with toggle clasp. New Release - Sauscony's Heart

This piece is a tribute to a dear friend of mine here in SL who was taken from this world far too soon.

Sauscony was one of my first friends in SL and one of the few I considered truly close to my heart. I met her early on in my journey and we became extrordinarily close - friends, and much more. We laughed together, we cried together, and we waded through mounds of drama together. A combination of RL and different directions in SL led us away from each other, but we still talked and I thought of her often.

It hit me harder than I expected to learn she was gone. If ever anyone doubts the validity of an SL friendship, a loss like this will bring home that love and friendship and respect is real, even if you never met the person you cared about in real life.

Soz didn't want flowers, nor did she want to tell us where to send things in her name. She said if you feel like you want to give something, then do it on your own terms, with what matters to you the most. I thought if I could create something beautiful to remember her by and share it with everyone, then in a way that is my remembrance.

So we have Sauscony's Heart. It comes in gold and platinum, mod/copy and is $250L. All proceeds from this piece will go in her name to the Alabama Wildlife Center, Alabama’s oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation center and a fantastic organization.

I appreciate you reading this far along and I hope each of you will message your dear friends in SL and tell them how much you care. That might be the greatest gift of all for Soz.

Where I've been lately!

So if you're wondering where my new releases are... I thought I would show you what I've been up to while those 15 half finished jewelry projects are sitting on my workbench gathering virtual dust! We finally figured out that we really really REALLY needed more room so we looked for a larger plot of land and I built a store. Yes, that's right - tiny prim girl did a HUGE store build. Ok, huge for me anyway. Three floors, skylights, fountains, alll that jazz. I wanted to rip my hair out, but in the end I think it turned out ok. Still tweaking a bit, then I'll actually get my things set up (Malk's eyes and textures are already up and ready for purchase) then finish my projects, and hopefully have a grand opening! Here's a few pics of the progress and a bonus shot of us for Halloween:

Review Copies

I had someone ask me what my policy was on review copies. I had to tell her that I hadn't really formulated one, (insert Home Improvement grunt here ;)) so I sat down to ponder it a moment and this is what I came up with.

Anyone can request a review copy if they send me an IM or comment on my blog under the particular release they are interested in. If you see an item in the store, just drop me an IM (or better yet, a notecard - evil IM cappage!) I only ask that you let me know the reason for the review copy, if you are a blogger or a podcaster or some other legitimate use of the review copy that I haven't thought about. My review copies will be the same as my normal items - mod/copy/no transfer unless you request otherwise.

I plan to distribute some review copies and/or folders with pictures and landmarks on my own to people I think might find them interesting. I will make every attempt to find and comply with your review policy before I send items. If I drop items on you, I don't have any expectations of a review. However, if there is a specific reason you chose not to review and it would help me to send you releases that are more to your taste or to improve my work, I welcome commentary :)

Now I have a review copy policy, woot! So look through my baubles and let me know if something strikes your fancy ;)

Well, in the information card I state that I was inspired by an element in a Cartier piece I saw in a fashion magazine, but I took that one element and made it my own work. I didn't hear about the whole Himalia thing until it was over, though I did read over the whole drama once I found out. Most unfortunate all around and I'm sorry you both had to go through that.

This piece was in a rough stage of completion before Elexor's limited edition came out. I did hold onto it after reading about the uproar debating on whether or not to release it. But in the end I took his words to heart when he said "I doubt there is a single store in SL - fashion or otherwise - that doesn’t have at least a few pieces inspired by real life objects or styles." I took that pave circle and black pearl and made it completely my own work. I'm proud of it and I hold it up to anyone who wants to compare it to my inspiration.

If we hold back as artists because we are afraid of being accused of copying, it stifles our creativity and taints our work. I am an artist in RL and copying in my field is a big issue, with posts filled with vitriolic debate on the forums. Basically, you have to look at a piece with your heart. If you know inside it is from your own well of creativity, the inspiration is irrelevant.

Oh, and I named it Eclipse because the the theme of the Jewelry Expo was celestial! *chuckles* I had no idea what Himalia meant until now, so I learned something new :) But I do thank you for cautioning me! It's nice to see that even despite the drama that can surround the SL Fashion World there are fellow creators who want to look out for each other :)

Huzzah! Three cheers to Miriel for doing such a great job :) I haven't been able to browse anyone else's wares yet, but I am planning to do so tonight. Just from what I've seen, there are some great things there. Including mine ;)

I've released quite a few things for the expo, including a limited edition set I've ben tweaking for three months now at least! I'm very happy with it. Here's the Eclipse Collection - Lunar and Solar...

I'm very excited about this one - I've spent quite a bit of time on it getting the look I wanted. I like it so much that I'm doing it as my first limited edition. I haven't decided on the number limit yet, probably 20. If I do that, I suppose I have to figure out how to do a limited edition release. Anyone done that before? What's the best method?

I'm pondering if I have enough things to release a notice on FashCon... I'm awfully nervous about it, as well as submitting things for bloggers to review. I must confess I've seen things I might consider less well made than my pieces reviewed favorably... but I am such a perfectionist its hard for me to judge. Oh well - sink or swim time, I suppose!

On another note... I wonder if I should keep using myself as the model for the jewelry. On one hand, it certainly is easiest and keeps a bit of continuity. On the other, people may get sick of seeing my face all the time! I welcome opinions on that.

Jewelry Expo!

I just read a post on Miriel's blog about doing an SL Jewelry Expo - similar to Hair Fair except for jewelry. I think it is a fantastic idea and frankly I can't believe no one has done it yet. I've joined the group and I'm looking forward to (hopefully) participating. She does bring up a good point about land, but I am sure someone will come forward with an offer once the ball gets rolling.

In other news - I have LOTS of new pieces to release, and as soon as I get pictures done I will post them on the blog. Some neat things, I think. My first prim chain - which is lovely, but made me want to rip out my hair whilst it was in progress.

Well, it is official. I am a Certified Master Jeweler in SL. We had our Graduation Sale today - I did well, and I plan to work on getting all these items in my store ASAP. But for now, here are the highlights:
